What a personal care aide does

Personal care aides (PCAs) help clients with daily living at home — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, meals, light housekeeping and companionship. PCAs typically don't perform clinical tasks.

Training requirements for PCAs vary a lot from state to state, and some programs (such as Medicaid-funded personal care) set their own rules. State the training you require, or that you'll provide it.

Common questions

What's the difference between a PCA and a CNA?

A CNA holds a state certification and can perform some clinical tasks like vital signs under nurse supervision. A PCA focuses on non-clinical personal care and daily living, and requirements depend on the state and program.

What should a PCA job description include?

Personal care and daily-living duties, any training or certification required, schedule and shifts, pay range, benefits and a quick way to apply.

Can I hire PCAs without experience?

Many agencies do, especially if they provide training. If you do, say so in the posting — it's one of the strongest draws for new caregivers.
