What a home care CNA does

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) has completed state-approved training, passed a competency exam and is listed on the state nurse aide registry. In home care, CNAs follow each client's care plan under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Compared with a general caregiver, a CNA job description should mention clinical tasks such as taking vital signs, documenting care and reporting changes in condition to the nurse. Always state that an active CNA certification is required, and check the scope of practice in your state before listing specific tasks.

Common questions

What should a CNA job description include?

The certification requirement, the setting (home care), who supervises the CNA, the hands-on duties (personal care, vital signs, transfers, documentation), the schedule, the pay range and how to apply.

Do CNAs need to be on the state registry?

Yes — CNAs are listed on their state's nurse aide registry, and most agencies check the registry before hiring. Say in the posting that an active certification in good standing is required.

What's the difference between a CNA and a home health aide?

Both help clients with personal care under a nurse's direction. A CNA holds a state certification and is on the nurse aide registry; a home health aide has completed state-approved home health aide training. Requirements vary by state, so list exactly what your agency needs.
