What a dementia care caregiver does

Dementia care caregivers support clients living with Alzheimer's and other dementias at home. Alongside personal care, the work centres on keeping familiar routines, gentle redirection, supervision for safety (wandering and falls) and meaningful activities.

In the posting, ask for prior dementia or memory-care experience if you need it, mention any dementia training you provide, and describe the temperament you're looking for — patience and calm matter more than anything else in this role.

Common questions

What experience should a dementia caregiver have?

Prior experience with memory care or clients with dementia is ideal. Many agencies also hire caring people without it and provide dementia-specific training — say which applies.

What duties are unique to dementia care?

Keeping consistent routines, redirecting during confusion or distress, supervising for wandering and fall risks, and planning calm, familiar activities like music, photos and simple tasks.

Should I mention dementia training in the job description?

Yes. If you provide dementia care training, list it as a benefit — it attracts caregivers who want to grow their skills.
