What a companion caregiver does

Companion caregivers support older adults who are mostly independent but benefit from company, routine and help around the house: conversation and activities, light meals, light housekeeping, errands and accompanying clients to appointments.

Be clear in the posting that the role is non-hands-on. That attracts people who are great with clients but don't yet have personal-care training — and many agencies hire companions with no prior experience and train them.

Common questions

Do companion caregivers help with bathing?

Usually not. Companion care is non-hands-on: company, activities, meals, housekeeping and errands. If the role includes personal care, post it as a caregiver or personal care aide role instead.

Do companion caregivers need certification?

Often no certification is required, though many agencies ask for CPR/First Aid and a background check. List exactly what your agency requires.

Is companion care a good entry-level caregiving job?

Yes — it's a common first role. Saying "no experience needed, we'll train you" in the posting widens your applicant pool considerably.
